Abstract

MAGALHAES, Mauro de Oliveira; ALVARENGA, Patrícia  and  TEIXEIRA, Marco Antônio Pereira. Relationship between parenting styles, goal instability and career indecision with adolescents. Rev. bras. orientac. prof [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.1, pp.15-25. ISSN 1984-7270.

Parenting styles are known to influence the psychosocial development of children and adolescents. However, it is not clear how parenting styles are related to career indecision with adolescents. This study investigated possible associations between parenting styles, career indecision and goal instability. A sample of 199 high school students from public schools located in the south of Brazil, with mean age of 17,24 years (SD = 2,17), answered measures of parenting styles, goal instability and career indecision. Adolescents raised under an authoritative style showed lower goal instability than those raised under a negligent style. Regression analysis suggested that goal instability is a mediator variable in the relationship between parental responsiveness and level of career indecision. Results highlighted the importance of parental responsiveness for the psychosocial development of adolescents.

Keywords : parenting styles; adolescence; career choice.
