Abstract

One of the striking features of recent decades is the aging of the population, due to the current demographic situation. The age refers to the stage of life cycle that begins at age 65. The elderly are taken as dispossessed, unabled, unfit for work and unable to fulfill its basic duties of citizenship, as well as the own demographic reality, contribute to the institutionalization of the elderly in nursing homes. This article aims to reflect on the current perspective of the elderly in the theoretical framework of psychoanalysis and allowing a greater humanization to asylums. The strategy employed to support these ideas consisted of literature searches and field research, conducted in a nursing home in a northwest town of Sao Paulo. It was used group dynamics giving priority to the communication. The phenomenon of aging is a current and growing reality , which makes it relevant to study mechanisms that help this population to have a decent life and with quality.
