Abstract

OSPINA, Jessica Marín; URREGO, Ángela María Jiménez  and  BETANCOURT, Eder Antonio Villamarín. The importance of breastfeeding in the physical, mental and relational development of children. Vínculo [online]. 2015, vol.12, n.1, pp.07-18. ISSN 1806-2490.

This work is done in the framework of an investigation on Nutrition and linkage in agreement with the Pontificia Bolivariana University - Palmira branch, Valle University and Departmental hospital Mario Correa Rengifo. Given the figures on the average duration of breastfeeding in Valle del Cauca, coupled with the high rates of malnutrition, an urgency in the intervention on this population is evident. In this regard, breastfeeding is taken as the axis, around which you can set a representation of what the family will be for the child and the bond that is established from it. To understand the above, a semistructured interview and three non-participant observations of two mothers during the time of breastfeeding their children (13 days and 45 days old respectively) were made, whose initial findings speak about the importance of family in providing spiritual support to the mother, the social and emotional nature that surrounds the act of breastfeeding and how this will always be mediated by an "other" that feeds, establishing the importance of the early bonding between mother and child. From what was found it is emphasized that breastfeeding as a natural process, represents benefits when done properly; It highlights that this initial feeding supply is not only an adequate promoter for physical and cognitive health, but a prelude to the creation of social links whereas food is the construction bridge for a child´s identity.

Keywords : family; bonding; breastfeeding; children.
