SONEGO, Joice Cadore and LOPES, Rita de Cássia Sobreira. The "black continent" of fatherhood in the context of assisted reproduction. Estud. pesqui. psicol. [online]. 2016, vol.16, n.3, pp.892-910. ISSN 1808-4281.
This study followed a remarkable path to fatherhood in the context of assisted reproduction that began with pregnancy and ended when the baby was one year old. The single case that was longitudinally studied involved a man and his wife with mixed infertility that had done in vitro fertilization. Three semi-structured interviews were conducted at different times: during the third trimester of pregnancy; when the baby was three months old; and at the end of the baby's first year. A clinical report was produced and used to follow Luis's experience. It was observed that the infertility, treatment, and subsequent fatherhood were experienced in very unique ways, which required time to develop and integrate. The time the father spent with the baby was essential in his process of gradually seeing himself as a father and of being able to own his desire for fatherhood. Thus, this study hopes to contribute to a listening space that can help unveil the "black continent" of fatherhood in this context, which is still rather inaccessible to both the fathers that experience it and to professionals.
