Abstract

DATTILIO, Frank M.. Restructuring family schemas. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2006, vol.2, n.1, pp.17-34. ISSN 1808-5687.

Schemas, which organize thought and perception, are viewed by cognitive-behavior therapists as having an integral influence on emotion and behavior. The role of schema in family conflict and the specific interventions used in restructuring them during the course of family therapy are specifically addressed in this article. Additional discussion highlights the concepts of attributions, assumptions, and family standards, and the role they play in schemas, as well as the overall family dynamics. A series of steps are also suggested for facilitating the process of schema analysis and thought restructuring during the process of therapy with dysfunctional families.
