Abstract

MEA, Cristina Pilla Della; ZANCANELLA, Sabrina; FERREIRA, Vinícius Renato Thomé  and  WAGNER, Márcia Fortes. Early maladaptive schemas in hospitalized patients for suicide attempt. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2015, vol.11, n.1, pp.3-9. ISSN 1808-5687.  https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20150002.

Suicidal behavior is an important issue for mental health, and a proper assessment of its occurrence and association with psychological factors are critical for risk monitoring and treatment. Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMS), which are long-lasting emotional and cognitive patterns originated in childhood and are repeated throughout life, may be related to this behavior. This study consisted of a quantitative research, with exploratory and correlational design, which aimed to identify EMS present in 15 patients with suicide attempt admitted to a psychiatric hospital compared to 25 people in a non-clinical sample who answered a socio-demographic questionnaire and the Young Schema Questionnaire - short version (YSQ-S2). The results showed that the clinical sample had more impairments in all EMS compared to the non-clinical sample; furthermore, defectiveness/shame, social isolation and disconnection were the EMS that showed the greatest number of strong correlations with others. Proper evaluation of these EMS may have clinical relevance in evaluating suicidal behavior.

Keywords : suicide; early maladaptive schemas; schema therapy.
