Symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress can all contribute to emotional eating. Research also indicates the existence of an inverse relationship between these symptoms and healthy eating behavior. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential predictive relationships between symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress and emotional and intuitive eating scores. This is a quantitative and explanatory study, comprising 209 participants over 18 years of age. Participants answered the sociodemographic questionnaire, the Emotional Eating Scale (EES), the Intuitive Eating Scale (IES-2) and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). The results indicated positive and significant relationships between emotional symptoms of anxiety, depression and stress and the total emotional eating score. In the simple linear regression analysis, it was found that 12% of the variation in emotional eating is explained by symptoms of stress, 9.2% by symptoms of depression and 4.7% by symptoms of anxiety. It appears that the emotional symptoms mentioned above can individually explain unique variations in emotional eating. It is suggested that this relationship can be better understood, with further studies that consider other mediating variables such as emotional regulation, as the latter has been showing predictive potential for emotional eating.
