Abstract

YAVORIVSKI, Andressa; DALLANORA, Suelen  and  HAGEN, Martine Elisabeth Kienzle. Mindfulness in the treatment of eating behaviors associated with overweight and obesity: A systematic review. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2022, vol.18, n.2, pp.179-194.  Epub June 24, 2024. ISSN 1808-5687.  https://doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20220016.

Introduction:

Excess weight affects 60.3% of the Brazilian population and is associated with a higher risk for chronic non-communicable diseases, and lower quality and life expectancy. Mindfulness-based interventions have been studied in the treatment of maladaptive eating behaviors associated with overweight (OW) and obesity (OB).

Objective:

To analyze the effects of Mindfulness-based interventions in adults with OW or OB on binge eating, emotional eating, external eating and food cravings.

Methods:

A systematic review was performed, filed in PROSPERO CRD42021247466. Randomized clinical trials with adults (>18 years old), with OW or OB (BMI>25 kg/m2), intervention with mindfulness, comparison with a control group, and at least one outcome of interest were selected.

Results:

304 articles were found and 19 were selected. The mindfulness-based intervention group showed reduced binge eating in 11 of 13 studies. In 9 of 13 studies, the mindfulness-based intervention group showed greater reductions in emotional eating compared to the control group, and the same occurred in external eating in three of five studies. Only the mindfulness-based intervention group reduced food cravings in the four studies with this analysis.

Conclusion:

mindfulness-based interventions can decrease eating behaviors associated with OW and OB, mainly binge eating and emotional eating.
