Abstract

CHIQUETTO, Matheus Vercesi; MENEZES, Carolina Baptista  and  LOPES, Fernanda Machado. The relationships between cognitive distortions, emotion regulation strategies, Mindfulness and the psychological distress in adults. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. Cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT) consider several processes as transdiagnostic factors involved in the maintenance and/or prevention of psychological distress (PD). Cognitive distortions (CD), emotion regulation strategies (ERS) and mindfulness (MD) represent some of these processes in CBT. This study investigated the relationship of CD, ERS and MD with PD and explored the relationship of these mechanisms with each other. A cross-sectional method with non-probabilistic sampling was used. The online data collection took place through the snowball technique. Variables were measured individually by different instruments. 217 Brazilians between 18 and 61 years old participated. The results of the regression analyzes demonstrated that the increase in maladaptive CD and ERS and the decrease in adaptive MD and ERS predicted PD. The network analysis demonstrated the positive interrelationship between maladaptive CD and ERS, and they presented negative relationships with MD. No significant relationships were observed between MD and adaptive ERS. These findings demonstrate the specificity of the processes as predictors in different directions of PD, as well as their interactions with each other. The understanding of these relations allowed establishing theoretical-methodological connections and demonstrated the possibility of combining clinical interventions for the treatment of PD considering the theoretical perspectives of the analyzed processes.
