CERQUEIRA-SILVA, Simone and DESSEN, Maria Auxiliadora. Family Education Programs for disable children's families: a promising proposal. Contextos Clínic [online]. 2018, vol.11, n.1, pp.59-71. ISSN 1983-3482. https://doi.org/10.4013/ctc.2018.111.05.
The importance of intervening with families has been particularly emphasized when the aim is to promote human development. With regard to children with disabilities, this work acquires a peculiar importance. If, on the one hand, the family needs to expand its competences in order to behave more efficiently when a child has a disability, on the other hand, it requires greater attention to carry out the normative and non-normative tasks of its life course. This article aims to present a critical review of the literature in order to propose Family Education Programs as a promising alternative for working with the families of children with disabilities in the perspective of the Family Centered Model. In order for families to have a more involvement in public policies and prevention and intervention programs for children with disabilities, it is necessary to use programs based on the Family Centered Models, a powerful resource for professionals in the areas of health and education, since the focus is on the families' self-management and social control. Among the types of programs centered on families, we emphasize the entitled "Family Education Programs", whose families are encouraged to play an active and participative role in the whole intervention process. They are taught, informed and oriented with respect to the development of family relationships at the same time that there is the recognition and strengthening of their knowledge and their successful experiences. We conclude by reiterating the importance of integrating knowledge of diverse areas and of the families, in accordance with the complexity of human development processes.
