Abstract

FREITAS, Patrícia Martins; SIQUARA, Gustavo Marcelino  and  CARDOSO, Thiago da Silva Gusmão. Mother's perception on family relations and behavior of their children: a correlational study. Gerais, Rev. Interinst. Psicol. [online]. 2013, vol.6, n.1, pp.20-35. ISSN 1983-8220.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between family functioning and behavior problems in children from the mothers' perception. Participants were 21 mothers of children between 7 and 11 years who attended public schools. The instrument was Child Behavior Cheek List (CBCL), Family Climate Inventory (ICF) and the Familiograma, all instruments were completed by mothers. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results show significant and strong correlations between factors that assess the family environment and the presence of behavior problems presented by the children. The results show that there is a relationship between these variables, the higher the level of affection and cohesion the lower the presence of behavior problems. The consistency of these results is important evidence about the family environment as a source of emotional and psychosocial development.

Keywords : Behavior problems; Family relationships; Child development.
