This article discusses the importance of cultural ideals in the process of constitution of femininity and the creation of a pattern of normality for women in modernity. Since the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a new ideal of femininity arose: a woman dedicated to motherhood and submissive to her husband's desire. Rousseau is considered the main author of this new ideal that served as an identification possibility to the drives, contributing to women's subjectivation means. With this new model of femininity, there is the conflictive relationship between the moral established by this ideal and the sexual drive, causing neuroses.
