The oncology nursing is a specialty that provides assistance to people with cancer, dealing with death and terminality as a normal event in daily work. In this context it is clear these are issues impact directly professionals who, theoretically, are considered qualified to work in that environment. This is a qualitative study that involved the nursing staff of the oncology clinic of a hospital in Belo Horizonte city - Brazil. The method used semi-structured interviews and observations and also a content analysis that was used to examine the collected data. As conclusion we point out some factors such as the professional bond with the patient, the disease cancer itself, terminality, institutional aspects, among others, are important to maintain the relationship between nursing professional and patient. All these points were associated to the processes of subjectivation and are considered elements that flow the production of subjectivity within the analyzed context.
