Abstract

BRAGA, Raissa de Brito  and  PEGORARO, Renata Fabiana. Psychiatric hospitalization: what do families think about it?. Rev. Psicol. Saúde [online]. 2020, vol.12, n.1, pp.61-73. ISSN 2177-093X.  https://doi.org/10.20435/pssa.v12i1.820.

Families participate in the informal care of people in psychic suffering in Brazil, which includes the identification of the need to search for both extra and hospital health services. This article aims to investigate, from the therapeutic itinerary of people with mental suffering, how families perceive the need for hospitalization and the purpose of this resource. Participants were ten relatives of people being treated in a Psychosocial Care Center (CAPS) with at least one psychiatric hospitalization. A semi-structured interview script was used on sociodemographic characterization and guiding questions about the demand for an evaluation of mental health services, and the analysis was based on the Grounded Theory. Psychiatric hospitalization appears as the first used health resource, maintaining the historical function of hosting, feeding and medicating the user, without offering interventions that include families.

Keywords : psychiatric hospitalization; families; psychiatric reform.
