Abstract

PEIXOTO, Clayton et al. Losses, Mourning and Mental Suffering in Climacteric Women. Rev. Psicol. Saúde [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.2, pp.117-130.  Epub July 05, 2024. ISSN 2177-093X.  https://doi.org/10.20435/pssa.v14i2.1356.

This paper aims to discuss that the highest mental illness incidence in the climacteric results mainly from the losses experienced in this life’s stage. To this, we resorted to a qualitative psychoanalytic bias analysis, based on the researcher’s experience involved in a cross-sectional study with 130 climacteric women aged between 45 and 65 years. The main complaints observed were organized in groups by thematic similarity. It was observed that, during the climacteric period, mourning is installed due to different losses perceived by women. Most of these losses are related to issues of aesthetics, fertility, life project, and the social losses experienced. We conclude that the mental illness observed in the climacteric may be the symptom that is formed to denounce a context of losses. Understanding these losses and installing a mourning process can allow for a more humane look and more efficient care.
