Abstract

OLIVEIRA, Janderson Carneiro de  and  BERTONI, Luci Mara. Drug Uses: Social Representations of Mental Health Professionals of a CAPS AD in Brazil’s Northeast. Rev. Psicol. Saúde [online]. 2022, vol.14, n.2, pp.175-190.  Epub July 05, 2024. ISSN 2177-093X.  https://doi.org/10.20435/pssa.v14i2.1181.

In this article, we analyze the social representations of mental health professionals about the use of psychoactive substances. Interviews were conducted with health professionals from a Psychosocial Care Center - alcohol and drugs (CAPS AD) and data were analyzed based on Content Analysis. From the analysis, three categories emerged: a) “Drugs: a look from CAPS AD professionals”; b) “Legalization versus criminalization of drugs: what do mental health professionals have to say?”; c) “Treatment models: Harm Reduction versus abstinence”. Professionals have found it difficult to work with the Harm Reduction approach, and do not have a consolidated position on drug legalization and criminalization. Despite the limitations, let this study serve as an object of reflection, in view of a reorientation of our mental health care practices.

Keywords : social representations; use of drugs; health professionals; mental health; CAPS AD.
