Abstract

SANTOS, Alessandro de Oliveira dos  and  SCHUCMAN, Lia Vainer. Inequality, racial relations and the training of the psychologist. Rev. Epos [online]. 2015, vol.6, n.2, pp.117-140. ISSN 2178-700X.

This exploratory descriptive qualitative study investigated the conception of psychology students from a public university at the metropolitan region in São Paulo about the race subject to understand inequality and the relevance of racial relations to shape psychologists. Data collection occurred between August 2009 and May 2010 through 16 interviews with graduate students and 4 focus groups with undergraduate students. Content analysis of the data showed that students consider skin color an important category to understand inequality and racial relations an important subject to shape psychologists. However, according to the students the racial relations subject in Brazil didn´t receive enough attention during their training. The racial quotas discussion in a public university was the major factor that caused reflection about racial relations subject in the classroom. The study showed that the racial relations deserves more attention from undergraduate and postgraduate disciplines and a critical reflection about the race category and racism should be included during the shaping of psychologists.

Keywords : inequality; racial relations; psychologists training; qualitative research.
