Abstract In 1912, Freud said that, in psychoanalisis, research and treatment are integrated. In 1923, Freud defined psychoanalysis in such a manner that the integration of research, treatment and theory within this science became evident, and the displacement of any of these aspects could disqualify psychoanalysis. However, there are some extreme psychoanalytical readings that emphasize only one of those aspects, highlighting either the theory or the technique, as shown by some authors. In order to contribute to the discussions about psychoanalytic formation and practice and to the retrieval of Freuds integrative vision, the course was set to evince the theoretical basis underlying the technique of free association, a fundamental rule of psychoanalysis, in order to clarify the reasons that give it such status. Therefore, two important Freudian theses and metapsychological descriptions present in The Interpretation of Dreams (1900) are explained, from among which stands out the notion of meta- representations.
