Adoption is an important legal mechanism for children and adolescents to have a family life, but an imprecise figure, with numbers that are not very tangential, goes back to adopting children through the informal way. The present work aimed to understand the family dynamics that involves irregular adoption. Methodologically, the research was supported by psychoanalytical precepts and used the case study as a strategy of analysis. The study family welcomed two children, sisters, in an irregular adoption. Initially, five psychological visits were carried out in the form of family care, and later the case was taken in psychotherapy. The analysis of the case includes aspects such as the insecurity experienced by the family, the relationship with the family of origin, the symbolic place of the sisters in the families and the repetition of patterns in the family functioning. The urge to explore unconscious aspects embedded in irregular adoption emerges in order to overcome the silencing that fears and threats hold in the family imaginary.
