Abstract

FLORES, DIANA; CUNICO, SABRINA DAIANA; LUCENA, ROSANE WOJCIECHOWSKA  and  GIONGO, CARMEM REGINA. Work and precariousness: experiences of men deprived of their liberty. Rev. psicol. polít. [online]. 2023, vol.23, n.57, pp.426-440.  Epub June 07, 2024. ISSN 2175-1390.

This article aims to find out both the meaning of work for individuals deprived of liberty in a prison institution for men located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul and their relations to precarious work. This qualitative study with an exploratory-descriptive design was carried out in a prison institution for men in Rio Grande do Sul. For data collection, a focus group technique was used. Twenty-seven men deprived of their liberty who worked in a sewing project participated in the study. The groups’ data were recorded, transcribed and submitted to content analysis. The results showed that the meaning of work was associated with survival and remission of sentence, with no potential to subsidize reintegration into the labor market. It was concluded that prison labor policies need to be reset, especially regarding health and education of people deprived of their liberty.

Keywords : labor; precarization; prison institution for men.
