Introduction:

Take responsibility for a child with a chronic disorder presents changes in the family’s quality of life. This research aims to identify stress symptoms in caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and to verify the prevalence of the manifested stress phases.

Material and Methods:

From the quantitative approach the Lipp Stress Symptoms Inventory for Adults (LISS) was used.

Results and Discussion:

The study was carried out in a city in the interior of Minas Gerais. Seventy-seven families of individuals with autism participated, represented by the family member most involved with the child’s care. The mother is the one who is taking care of the child full time, suffering the most psychosocial impacts.

Conclusion:

It would be appropriate to create intervention strategies and provide caregivers with an environment where they can be heard. This prevents the worsening of the maternal stress situation, enabling the drop in stress levels, benefiting the family environment.
