Abstract

For psychoanalysis, human subjectivity is comprised of ego, id and superego. Its understanding helps to clarify the unconsciousness and therefore assist men in dealing with its anguishes. Subjectivism is established by the society and therefore is related to the culture within it is inserted. Psicanalysis was created in the industrial/modern society. Because of two world wars the society decided to give up liberty for security. The cultural superego inhibited human aggressiveness, and forced men to internalize their feelings. Therefore modern societys unrest was caused by repression (mostly sexual repression). Nowadays, post-industrial/post-modern society is characterized by the excess and fragmentation of information. Security is traded for happiness. Post-modern society is hedonist and imagetical. Therefore, post-modern unrest is caused by repression imposed by media standards. There is a clear unbalance among the psychic components of the self, particularly the id. Hence psychoanalysis remains an important instrument to face the anguish of post-modern men.
