In this article the author raises questions on atheism, considering its possible amplification in contemporary society, in order to verify the correlation of such increase with the decline of the father function nowadays. It also seeks to situate what some authors say about religious experiences, what psychoanalysis has to say about such experiences and the paternal function and how society has felt the decline of this function.
