Resumen

RODRIGUES, Olga Maria Piazentin Rolim. Babies at risk and their families: the preventive work. Temas psicol. [online]. 2003, vol.11, n.2, pp.107-113. ISSN 1413-389X.

The infantile development can be improved with a precocious identification of the baby’s problem, followed by guidance for systematic stimulation, and the emotional support to the parents, implementing cooperative relations with them. A Maternity Hospital that attends mainly users of SUS [Brazilian public health system] was chosen as the research setting. Babies were selected according to some standards (malformation, low weight, being premature, contamination from the mother, and children of adolescent mothers); those babies were classified as at-risk and were included in the project "Follow up of the development of babies at-risk" in the Center of Applied Psychology, UNESP. This main project is subdivided into various research projects and there are also extension projects to this population. Some projects are developed jointly with parents of babies born with brain and facial abnormalities. There also are projects of longitudinal follow up with children at risk, among others. Results have shown the importance of these projects to the families and babies as well, improving their development. Results show the Program improves the chances of a better developmental pattern by the babies whose families engage in the Program.
