This paper addresses the psychoanalytic concept of regression and their differences in the works of Freud and Winnicott. Thus it is intended to discuss some differences between these authors regarding the understanding of mental illness and the role of environment in individual development. For this, it starts from the Freud formulation of infantile sexuality postulated in the article "Three essays on the theory of sexuality" (1905) and works the concept of regression as developed at the Conference XXII (1916-17), which leads to a Freudian understanding of the etiology of neurosis, according to the theoretical expand so far developed by the author. Next, it discusses the concept of regression according to the theory of personal maturity proposed by Winnicott as well as the understanding of illness that results from this theoretical proposition
