SOUSA, Cleide Maria de y MENDES, Ana Magnólia. To live from the wastes or at the wastes?: The relationship between health and work at the occupation of recyclabe material cooperativated collectors ub the Distrito Federal - exploratory study. Rev. Psicol., Organ. Trab. [online]. 2006, vol.6, n.2, pp.13-41. ISSN 1984-6657.
This is an exploratory pilot study with the aim of testing a methodology for investigating the health-work relationship in the occupation of Recyclable Material Collectors who are organized into cooperatives in the Federal District in Brazil. The theoretical framework employed was that of Work Psychodynamics. The data collection was carried out through free observation of the collectors" work environment and four semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using thematic content analysis. The results indicate that, for the collectors, working with solid wastes seems to acquire a sense of survival. For them, health means being able to work, and professional identity represents the possibility of social inclusion. The relationship between the precarious working conditions and health hazards or loss of health is denied by the workers. Further studies must be carried out, with a multimethod approach to data collection, in order to confirm and broaden the findings ofthis study
