Brazil has approximately 700 thousand prisoners in penal establishments, which places the country among the three largest prison populations in the world. In this context, the prisoner's medical and health care is one of the Brazilian prison system's biggest problems. Based on this reality, the present study aimed to evaluate the access difficulties to healthcare in a penitentiary in the city of Campina Grande - Paraíba. It is a descriptive and exploratory research and it has the qualitative approach as a main reference. Thirty-five arrested men, aged 25-59, participated in the study. Data collection instruments used were: a sociodemographic questionnaire, a semi-structured interview and a field diary. Data analysis was performed using the enunciation analysis technique. The results showed that health in the prison studied is far from attending prerogatives regarding the right to health established in the Federal Constitution of 1988, and the National Policy for Integral Attention to the Health of People Deprived of Liberty in the Prison System. The results also showed that health within the prison is precarious, as there is lack of decent assistance. The physical structure is poor, there are overcrowding jail cells, and water and food have poor quality, which favors the proliferation of infectious diseases.
