DURAES, Larissa Pedreira  y  BARRERA, Sylvia Domingos. Letters Knowledge in Kindergartners: Effects of Using of a Mnemonic Alphabet. Estud. pesqui. psicol. [online]. 2021, vol.21, n.spe, pp.1586-1603. ISSN 1808-4281.  https://doi.org/10.12957/epp.2021.64036.

Letters knowledge is an important predictor of success in literacy. This study evaluated the effectiveness of using a mnemonic alphabet in learning letters by kindergartners. Twenty-five children (mean age of 5 years and 11 months) participated in the study. They knew less than 50% of the alphabet in the Pre-test. Participants were divided into two groups: one group participated in the intervention with mnemonic alphabet (GAM) and the other with conventional alphabet (GAC). During 10 sessions of 30 minutes each, the children were taught six letters unknown to them. In the Post-test, the children´s knowledge of the alphabet and the spelling of letters taught and words beginning with them were again evaluated. Both groups have made significant progress in knowledge of the letters taught, but only GAM has made significant progress in knowledge of alphabet in general, performing better also in the spelling of the letters and words dictated.

Palabras clave : letters knowledge; kindergartners; spelling.
