Resumen

FIGUEIREDO, Marina Vanzolini. Writing, hearing: perspectives on knowledge among the Aweti from the Upper Xingu. Ide (São Paulo) [online]. 2009, vol.32, n.48, pp.147-162. ISSN 0101-3106.

Following the author’s intensive field research among the Aweti, from the Upper Xingu, the paper presents a comparison between the anthopologist’s and her Indian natives’ conceptions of writing. While the former, according to a western notion of knowledge, see it as a way to register an understanding of the world (the Indians, taken as the subject of knowledge), to the latter writing appears as the means and outcome of expanding social relations. Knowledge about the world is thus embedded in the way by which it is acquired, that is, in the knowledge people have about each other while sharing information.

Palabras clave : Indigenous knowledge; Anthropological knowledge; South-American ethnology; Upper Xingu; Aweti.
