This article presents cases of individuals who are going to be submitted to bariatric surgery. We are aware of the fact that this radical solution implies both losing and gaining... losing in one’s body and gaining in one’s body image. The concepts of instinct and primary narcissism, introduced by Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan’s contributions on the scopic and invocative drives together with the operations of alienation and separation, can help us better understand this subject.
