Resumen

PEREZ-SANCHEZ, Rolando; AGUILAR-FREYAN, Wendy  y  VIQUEZ-CALDERON, David. Construcción social de la juventud y el papel percibido de los medios desde la perspectiva de los jóvenes. Actual. psicol. [online]. 2008, vol.22, n.109, pp.43-66. ISSN 0258-6444.

The present study seeks to inquire the representations about youth from the youth perspective of two different urban social situations. Four discussion groups were elaborated, two of them with youngsters of a subordinate-wageworker social situation (SSS) and two groups of youngsters within a management-professional situation (SSP). The participants of all groups were between 15 and 17 years old, from private and public high schools in San José, Costa Rica. This study seeks to distinguish the models of cultural signification of the adolescent phenomenon, for which the analysis method of the ground theory was resorted. The results distinguish a general comprehension structure: self-definition as generationalcultural group and a life course period that is part of a modernized society, resulting the youth in the principal stronghold of this modernization process. The youth period is only understood in the frame of intergenerational relations; in particular in the parent-son relationship, with attention to the social identity processes. Mass media and the cultural industry play a central role, of a pernicious character.
