The chemical dependence is considers a growing public health problem in the current society. It is observed that the drug users, including, alcohol and crack, have high levels of recurrence, being the motivation one of the important factors for the success of the treatment. In this sense, this research had the main objective of identifying the stages of motivation for the change in users of alcohol and crack institutionalized. It was performed with 200 chemical dependents, hospitalized for treatment in a hospital and in one recovery farm. A social demographic questionnaire and the scale URICA were used. Data were submitted to descriptive statistical and inferential analysis of the software SPSS. It was seen that most of the participants of the research are on the stage of contemplation, when the person admits having a problem and considers possibilities of change, showing that is worried and a clear evaluation among the advantages and disadvantages of changing. About the place of hospitalization, the users who are submitted to the treatment in farms of recovery seem to be motivated. It is expected that these data can help institutions in the elaboration of strategies that strength the motivation for the change and the conditions of treatment of the chemical dependence.
