The paper aims at analyzing Machado de Assis´s short-story “O espelho” (The Mirror), with special attention on its confluences with the narcissism's theory as presented by S. Freud in 1914. This exercise enables us watching how the psychoanalytical concepts can be used for analyzing a literary text, enlightening the relationship between literature and Psychoanalysis.
