Successful aging is understood as the compensation by the elderly of their reduced abilities as a function of normal aging. The present study investigated successful aging in cancer-affected elderly and researched the strategies of selection, optimization and compensation (SOC) adopted. Eight elderly people attended at a cancer hospital in the southern region of the country participated in the study, which used the Mental State Mini Exam, a closed questionnaire, and a semi-structured interview. In the data analysis, the patient's experience before and after the disease was compared and the information collected was interpreted through content analysis. It was verified that the elderly with cancer with the potential of orchestrating the SOC mechanisms have been found to favor successful aging.
