Resumen

FLORES MERCADO, Bertha Georgina. Las fiestas populares en la modernidad: celebración y sufrimiento en la fiesta mayor de Gracia de Barcelona. Rev. Mal-Estar Subj. [online]. 2006, vol.6, n.1, pp.201-218. ISSN 1518-6148.

The present article is the result of a wider investigation carried out in a neighborhood of the city of Barcelona concerning the "Fiesta Mayor" (annual popular celebration) of Gracia. In this article I concentrate on the relationship between the celebration, suffering and modernity. In this manner I try to argue that the modernization process in society, and therefore in the popular celebration, has produced a subject with the freedom to celebrate this but at the same time to suffer as the celebration is immersed in individualist and mercantile relations. In order to achieve the former at first I describe how the popular celebration is understood in a modern urban context and its modifications in relation to rural, industrial and consumerist society. The article has a phenomenological sense in that it tries to account for the experiences of participants during the organization and the celebration itself. These experiences are the result of 3 years of ethnographic investigation and interviews carried out with different participants of the Fiesta Mayor of Gracia.

Palabras clave : popular celebration; suffering; tradition and modernity.
