The aim of this essay is to explore the contributions of feminism to political psychology. An academic theory rooted in the civil rights movements, feminism has changed society and personal relationships. It has also contributed to free science from sexism and other discriminatory biases, pointing out the need to review theories and methodologies. Patriarchy reveals from different perspectives as the core issue to maintain women's oppresion. The gender perspective helps as well to detect discrimination and other forms of violence. Androcentrism turns out in publications and research, bodies are now part of the power struggle and the political stands include presently the public and private spheres. Furthermore, feminism has joined the academy with grass-roots movements and organizations, promoting the development of public policies to promote equality. These achievements for gender rights encounter a backlash that pretends to return to former days, for instance: there is a tendency to undermine labor rights to pursue more profit worldwide, public institutions offer less or worse services and conservative fundamentalists urge to turn back to the time when human sexuality and procreation were under their control.
