ROSA, Claudia Dias. The father and the integration of instinctuality. Winnicott e-prints [online]. 2010, vol.5, n.2, pp.1-20. ISSN 1679-432X.
This study purports to discuss - in the light of Winnicott's theory - some features of the contribution of the father for the important task of instinctuality integration, especially the integration of the destructiveness inherent to the primitive love impulse, as well as to examine the adverse effects brought about by the father's failure to play out that role. That integration, at the early stages of life, happens fundamentally within the mother-baby relation, and during the maturing process comes to include and require also the father's participation. So as to illustrate the topic I will use some passages of case B. described in Winnicott's Holding and Interpretation that exemplify the difficulties found by the patient to reach the Oedipus complex stage, given the failures in the integration of his impulsiveness, and passages that present features of the treatment offered by Winnicott to get the patient back on the maturing track.
