Many psychiatric disorders begin in childhood or adolescence. Depressive and anxious symptoms are among the most prevalent in the juvenile public and, when untreated, may be related to higher rates of psychopathology in later development. The development of programs for the prevention and treatment of situations of suffering can be considered important because they aim to reduce symptoms and improve emotional, social and cognitive strategies. The purpose of this narrative review of the literature is to conduct a critical discussion about intervention protocols for the treatment of anxiety disorders and depression in childhood. It discusses the main therapeutic resources used in these protocols, verifying results and possibilities from the interventions. The review built in this study points to the importance of building programs oriented to the treatment and prevention of situations of psychological distress. In addition, psychotherapeutic protocols can serve as guidelines for professionals to assist in the management of strategies for strategies of emotional regulation, problem solving and social skills. It is also worth noting the importance of research in the children's clinic to adapt international protocols and validate existing Brazilian programs.
