This paper presents a systematization of the data from 81 master thesis and doctoral dissertations on attitudes and perceptions concerning people with special educational needs. Eighty per cent of these investigations were carried out in public universities and most (82%) of them were published after 1990. People with mental retardation (50%), as well as children from elementary schools (31%) were the target population of these studies. Parents' perception was the most frequent theme, followed by teachers' and others professionals' representations. Data revealed that the both parents and professionals social representations of people with special needs shared derogatory social. These representations permeate their behavior as well as induce conformity and lack of responsibility in providing a high quality education. The need for better professional training is strongly stressed in these studies. Actually, the focus on barely discussed responsibility or guilt in social relations seems to a is miss the high social commitment of this academic production
