The aim of this study was to investigate the influences of parents on the career choice process of young people from disadvantaged socioeconomic classes. To this end, 200 students from the three high school grades collectively answered a questionnaire containing open and closed questions. The students were of both sexes and they were attending two public schools located in the outskirts of Rio Grande do Sul. The information from the open questions were analyzed through thematic content and data from the closed questions under descriptive statistical analyzes. The results showed that most participants do not believe they have been influenced by someone else in choosing a technical or a first degree course. Among students who identified interference in their career choice, parents were the most frequent. We conclude that parental opinion about the world of work conveys values that are considered by young people when setting their future plans.
