^lpt^aEste trabalho aborda os efeitos da cirurgia de mastectomia sobre as mulheres em atendimento ambulatorial em um hospital geral. Analisa, em especial, os efeitos dessa intervenção médica sobre a imagem corporal. Destaca um fato comum a todas as pacientes atendidas no ambulatório, que é a ausência do tema da morte em suas falas, mesmo nos casos mais avançados da doença. Elas abordam principalmente o tema da beleza, associando-a à feminilidade. Para essas mulheres, a mutilação do seio tem o efeito de um confronto com o real, despertando a angústia. A partir das contribuições de Lacan, o artigo discute a função do belo de fazer uma barreira protetiva em relação à Coisa, permitindo suportar o trágico.^len^aThis work addresses the effects of mastectomy surgery on women in outpatient care at hospitals. It particularly analyzes the effects of such a medical intervention in body image.
