ABSTRACT Congenital heart diseases are a conditions or defects that develops in the cardiovascular structure since the fetal life, they are estimated in 30 thousand cases per year in Brazil. The mortality rate is high and often they need hospitalization, interventions and even surgery. Parental care is fundamental for child's recovery and support for the proper recovery of the child. This transversal research aims to detect coping strategies adopted by parents, during the child's hospitalization, and compare differences between parents' gender. Twenty caregivers during follow-up of their hospitalized child for congenital heart disease treatment were evaluated. A sociodemographic questionnaire and Scale on Ways of Coping with Problems (WCP) were applied to those 20 parents. Results showed no differences considering gender, however, there is a correlation among sociodemographic factors, and the predominance of problem-focused coping strategy and religiosity was observed.
