^lpt^aO WAIS-III constitui a mais recente edição das Escalas Wechsler de Inteligência para adultos, publicada nos Estados Unidos em 1997. A referida escala apresenta inovações importantes em relação à edição anterior de 1981. O presente artigo tem como objetivo caracterizar o referido instrumento e apresentar os resultados parciais da pesquisa que está sendo realizada para adaptação e validação do WAIS-III para uso no contexto brasileiro. Até o presente momento, foram realizadas a tradução e a análise teórica dos itens com o objetivo de elaborar a versão piloto do instrumento, a ser aplicada em uma amostra composta por sujeitos residentes em Belo Horizonte^len^aThe WAIS-III constitutes the Wechsler Scales of Intelligence for adults latest edition published in the United States of America, in 1997. The scale mentioned above introduces important changes concerned with the 1981 previous edition. The present article characterizes the instrument above and presents the partial results of the research which has been fulfilled to adapt and legalize the WAIS-III to be used in the Brazilian context. So far, the translation and the theoretical analysis of the items were carried out and its objective is to elaborate a pilot version of the instrument which will be applied to a sample of individuais who live in Belo Horizonte
