^lpt^aO presente trabalho constitui uma revisão bibliográfica sobre os distúrbios da leitura em crianças, considerando aspectos históricos relativos à dislexia e às dificuldades normais de aquisição dessa habilidade. O texto está organizado em duas partes. A primeira trata dos mecanismos de reconhecimento de palavras, da aptidão para segmentar o material verbal em unidades menores que a sílaba, da consciência metafonológica e da memória operacional fonológica. Dentre os mecanismos cognitivos da leitura, o texto chama a atenção para a necessidade de estabelecer a distinção entre os fatores específicos e inespecíficos dessa atividade. A segunda parte trata da avaliação diagnostica dos problemas de leitura e se refere às provas de avaliação da memória operacional fonológica, linguagem e tarefas de segmentação de pseudopalavras.^len^aThe present paper is a review of the available literature on reading disabilities in children, taking into consideration the historical features related to the dyslexia and to the current difficulties in the acquisition of reading skills. The text is organized in two parts. The first one deals mechanisms of word recognition, the ability to divide break down the verbal material into units smaller than the syllable, the metaphonological awareness, and the phonological working memory. Concerning the cognitive aspects of reading, this paper emphasizes the need of establishing the difference between the specific and the non-specific factors involved in such activity. The second part focuses on the diagnostic of reading disabilities including phonological working memory tests, language tests and metaphonological pseudo words segmentation tests.
