^lpt^aO conceito lingüístico da arbitrariedade do signo lingüístico ocupa posição central na definição de Skinner do comportamento verbal. O papel das convenções da comunidade verbal, em vez de princípios mecânicos e geométricos, no estabelecimento da relação de contingência entre a resposta verbal e suas conseqüências, é crucial na distinção entre comportamento verbal e não verbal. Sugere-se uma mudança de ênfase nos elementos da definição do comportamento verbal: do agente do reforçamento, o ouvinte, para o critério de reforçamento, as convenções da comunidade verbal. A concepção de arbitrariedade da linguagem tem suas origens na filosofia da antigüidade grega e foi mantida viva, através de uma tradição ininterrupta, até a lingüística. A formulação de Skinner do comportamento verbal foi influenciada por essa tradição, em especial na versão apresentada pelo lingüista Leonard Bloomfield.^len^aThe linguistic concept of the arbitrariness of the linguistic signal is at the center of Skinner's definition of verbal behavior. The role of the conventions of the verbal community, instead of mechanical and geometrical principles, in establishing the contingent relation between the verbal response and its consequences constitutes the crucial distinction between verbal and non-verbal behavior. A change of emphasis on the elements in the definition of verbal behavior from the agent of reinforcement, the listener, to the criterion for reinforcement, the conventions of the verbal community, is advocated. The concept of the arbitrariness of language has its origins in ancient Greek philosophy and was kept alive through an uninterrupted tradition that reached linguistics. Skinner's formulation of verbal behavior was influenced by that tradition, especially in the version presented by the linguist Leonard Bloomfield.
