^lpt^aO artigo apresenta a etimologia como uma ferramenta que amplia e aprofunda a análise do discurso do paciente, a partir da compreensão de significados que surgem na pesquisa etimológica diacrônica. Parte da utilização da etimologia na obra de Sigmund Freud, apresenta a análise etimológica como uma contribuição à psicanálise e é ilustrado com exemplos de casos clínicos.^lpt^aThe article presents etymology as a tool that can be used in psychoanalysis in order to broaden and deepen the analysis of the patient's speech, through the understanding of meanings that emerge from the diachronic etymological research. It kicks off from the use of etymology in the work of Sigmund Freud, shows the etymological analysis as a contribution to psychoanalysis and is illustrated with examples of clinical cases.
