^lpt^aSer docente da FMP e ter preocupação com a relação entre estudantes e pacientes idosos nos remeteu a esta pesquisa. Nossos objetivos: analisar as representações sociais (RS) que estudantes de Medicina têm do idoso e da velhice, discutir suas relações com o idoso e identificar suas dificuldades, anseios e expectativas no manejo com esses pacientes. Discutimos sobre: conceitos de RS, RS e saúde, velhice e envelhecimento, e o idoso e a velhice na sociedade brasileira atual. Utilizamos questionário semi-estruturado e a técnica do "grupo focal". Os sujeitos foram 96 estudantes que cursaram 4º ano, em 2004. A análise dos dados foi realizada por freqüência de ocorrência, percentagens e análise temática. Conceituam velhice como "sabedoria" e "experiência", amenizando o fato de ser um período de perdas e limitações. Relacionam-se bem com idosos quando os identificam com seus avós. Sentem medo e angústia, e associam velhice à doença e à morte.^len^aAs an academic professor of the FMP, our concern with the relationship between the students and the elderly motivated us to carry out this research. Our objectives were to analyze Social Representations (SR) that medical students have regarding to the elderly and aging, to discuss their relationships with the elderly and to identify their difficulties, anxieties and expectations when dealing with these patients. Our discussions were about concepts of SR and SR and Health, Aging and Old Age, the Elderly and the Old Age in the current Brazilian Society. A semi-structured questionnaire and the technique "focal group" were used. The subjects were 96 students in the 4^th year, in 2004. Analysis of data was performed by occurrence of frequency, percentage and thematic analysis. They conceive the old age as "wisdom" and "experience", which may relieve the fact that it is a period of losses and limitations. They have a good relationship when the elderly look like their grandparents. They feel afraid and anguish due to the association of old age to disease and death.^les^aSer un profesor de la FMP y tener preocupación con la relación entre estudiantes y pacientes longevos nos llevó a hacer esta pesquisa. Nuestros objetivos fueron analisar las Representaciones Sociales (RS) que los estudiantes de Medicina tienen del idoso y de la vejez, discutir sus relaciones con ellos e identificar sus dificultades, ansias y expectativas en el manejo con esos pacientes. Discutimos sobre los conceptos de RS, RS y salud, Vejez y Envejecimiento y el Idoso y la Vejez en la Sociedad Brasileña actual. Utilizamos un questionario semi-estructurado y la técnica de grupo focal. Los sujetos fueron 96 estudiantes que cursaron el 4 año, en 2004. El análisis de los datos fue hecho por frecuencia de ocurrencia, porcentajes y análisis temática. Conceptuan la vejez como "sabiduría" y "experiencia", amenizando el hecho de que es un período de pérdidas y limitaciones. Ellos relaciónanse bien com los idosos cuando los identifican con los abuelos. Tienen miedo y angustia y asocian vejez a la enfermedad y muerte.
