Desde Freud o feminino é objeto de instigante pesquisa teórica e clínica, propondo a existência de um estágio pré-edipiano nas mulheres, caracterizado por uma relação singular entre a menina e sua mãe. A devastação do sujeito feminino, segundo Lacan, está relacionada ao enigma estabelecido pelo gozo feminino da mãe; o outro gozo ao qual somente os seres femininos teriam acesso, que define a ligação entre o feminino e a devastação que aparecerá na relação mãe e filha e nas parcerias amorosas.
