^lpt^aA sensibilidade reduzida à dor é largamente relatada como característica comum das crianças com autismo. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar a resposta à dor em pacientes com essa síndrome, utilizando-se de um grupo controle. Emprega-se como procedimento de obtenção de dados estímulo elétrico no dente e um instrumento subjetivo, a escala de faces para dor. Os resultados são comparados em 20 sujeitos do sexo masculino com autismo de alto funcionamento e 20 sujeitos do sexo masculino não afetados, ambos os grupos com idade média entre 17 e 20 anos. Os níveis de limiar à dor em pacientes com autismo são significativamente maiores que os do grupo de comparação. Além disso, não há diferença aparente entre os grupos com respeito à escala de faces. A disfunção executiva, os prejuízos na interação social e na comunicação nos afetados por autismo podem ter um papel importante na resposta à dor.^len^aReduced pain sensitivity is widely reported as being a common feature for children with autism. The aims of the study were to evaluate responsiveness to pain in patients with and without autism, using an electric stimulation on tooth and a subjective measure, the faces pain scale. Results were compared in 20 male subjects with high-functioning autism and 20 non-impaired male subjects aged at least 14 years old. Pain threshold levels in patients with autism were significantly higher than the comparison group. Moreover, no differences were apparent between the two groups regarding the evaluation on the faces pain scale. Executive dysfunction in autism and impairments in social interaction and communication in such patients may play an important role in responsiveness to pain.
