SANTOS, Edilena de Jesus Sousa SILVA, Silvana Maria Moura da. Family: their expectations and participation in the education of their children with blindness. []. , 34, 86, pp.99-117. ISSN 1415-711X.
The family plays a fundamental role in development and learning, as mediator of the child's relations with the world and the knowledge construction process becoming, in this way, the first core academic and social integration of people. Thus, we emphasize the importance of the family in people with visual impairment education, although sometimes the family may be seen by professionals as overprotective of their children with disabilities and perceived as disruptive in the school. This work is the result of a survey with parents of students with blindness and aimed to analyze what were the expectations and participation of them in the education of their children with the blindness process. The results showed that there is a positive relationship between parents' expectations and their way of participation in the educational lives of their children. Parents, even those without a higher instructional level, perform a huge effort to contribute to the educational process and expect their children to trace a different route than theirs. They point that the ways to help their kids are basically related to leaving and fetching at school, buying school supplies and reading books at home. It is concluded that the fathers / mothers of this research, in their perception and speeches, participate effectively in the education process of their children.
